Race Day
Our run will be held on Sunday, September 25, 2022 at 10 am around Waubonsie Lake. The run/walk will start on Waubonsie Valley High School (WVHS) property; 2590 Ogden Ave, Aurora, IL . We start on the SW corner of WVHS. Park in the upper lot by the pool and planetarium. Check out our Race Guide for information, maps, and tips.
Deadline for registration? You can register up to the morning of the event. Although t-shirt and color packets are only guaranteed for reservations prior to 9/16/22.
Planned race?
We will be featuring a 5K or a 3k color run/walk. Registration covers either event. You choose which route you'd like to take. Those looking for a little adventure can run through our 5 color stations for the 5k or 4 color stations for the 3K. Those looking to set a blistering time on a pure, clean run can avoid our color stations.
When is packet pick-up?
Packet pick-up will be on Saturday, September 24, 2022 at Waubonsie Valley High School 2590 Ogden Rd, Aurora, IL from 10 am - 2:00 Enter through Athletic (fieldhouse) doors on the north side of the school.
Packets may also be picked up the morning of the race, starting at 9 am (we suggest going on Saturday instead!!). We will be selling white bandanas and sunglasses for those interested.
When do I get the items I ordered?
You will receive your t-shirt and any extra items you ordered (bandana, sunglasses or extra color packet) at packet pick-up on 9/24 or 9/25 (your choice- we suggest 9/24!!). You will receive your free color packet for the Color Throw at the finish line!
What do I wear?
Your Color Run T-shirt included in your registration or a white t-shirt. The Warriors on the Run t-shirt will produce a bright effect and you are highly encouraged to wear it! If you choose to hit the color stations - you will end the race -- COLORIFIC!!! Shorts/pants can be any color. We do suggest you wear clothing that you don't mind if it gets dirty. Don't wear your NEW shoes!
Is the Color 5K safe?
The safety of our runners and volunteers is at the forefront of our minds and actions. As with any substance, you will want to keep the color out of your eyes and lungs. The color powder is made of high quality CORNSTARCH & FD&C dyes. All materials are 100% FD&C and/or D&C grade and approved by the US FDA. However our product is not designed for consumption. We encourage you to wear eye and mouth protection of your choosing.
Is this a chip-timed race?
No, our COLOR 5K puts the focus on FUN! It is all about getting crazy and having fun while practicing healthy living in a less stressful environment. However, our 5K is a certified course and so all of you serious runners, just get out your good watch and away you go. The 3K is not certified...it is about 3K :)
Homecoming is a week away, do I need to worry about colored hair?
No worries! The color usually washes right out. A couple of tips: if your hair is treated/colored, put conditioner in your hair before the race. If the color is a bit stubborn, PERT shampoo seems to work well.
Do the color stations affect runner vision? Or breathing?
As with any substance, you want to keep it out of your eyes and our “certified” color throwers try to aim low as you pass by. Many “Color Runners” opt to wear glasses or goggles for their eyes and use a bandana or dust mask for their mouths. The color can be avoided by running around the throwers or staying in the "middle lane". We will be selling white bandanas and sunglasses to runners at packet pick-up and the morning of the race.
How is the color administered along the course?
At the 5 color stations along the course, you will be greeted by some special volunteers who will be reaching in their big buckets and tossing color powder at you. These color stations are marked on the map and are easy to avoid if you so choose.
What is the Color Throw Party? What are the color packets for?
After the race, our DJ will lead participants in a color throw in a designated area. At their command, everyone will open up their color packet and throw it into the air for an enormous color explosion. We provide one bag of color in your race packet and more packets can be purchased during registration or on race day. This is a great opportunity for colorific pictures! We will have a photographer there and you will have the option to view and purchase pictures after the race. If you choose to get your own phone/camera in the mix, make sure it is covered in plastic. Do NOT throw color into anyone's face.
Can spectators attend the post-race Color Throw?
Absolutely. We will have some powder packets available first come/first serve for everyone to purchase.
Will the color ruin clothes or running shoes?
The color does mostly wash out after the event. As with anything dirty, the sooner you wash it the better. We suggest wearing items that you wouldn’t mind getting colorful. If you would like to preserve the color in your running shirt, spray it with vinegar and iron it. If you wash your shirt….the color will eventually come out. For FULL color cleaning ideas and tips, check out our Race Guide!
Do you have “cleaning stations” at the finish after party?
We will have some leaf blowers to give you a good head-start. With a good dusting off, you aren’t 100% clean, but you are good for the drive home. It would actually be pretty fun to see some of you around town still looking colorful. A good reminder of homecoming week!
How does the color affect the inside of cars?
Most people bring some towels for the insides of their cars, or a change of clothes just in case. It's like riding home from the pool in your wet swim suit!
Are cameras and phones safe to have in the color zones?
We will have a couple of race photographers shooting from a medium distance (25-50 feet). If you want to get shots right in the midst of the color we recommend covering cameras/phones with plastic wrap-but you may be best to keep your camera away from the color-frenzy during the race or color-throw. We will have affordable professional images available for sale after the race. All sales benefit the Athletic Boosters and PTA.
Can I register the day of the race?
Yes, plan to arrive at Waubonsie Valley High School between 9:00-9:30a to register the morning of the race. There will be a $5.00 fee increase on the day of the race. T-shirts and free color packet can only be guaranteed to those preregistered by September 9, 2022.
What is the course?
The 5K race will be run on a USATF-Certified course around tranquil Waubonsie Lake on Fox Valley Park District property behind Waubonsie Valley High School.
What if it rains? The color can be even brighter and better in the rain! We will run rain or shine (but of course, not in the lightening!). As with most fun runs, there are no refunds given in the event that the race is not run due to inclement weather.
Can I bring my dog/cat/turtle or my skateboard?
Unfortunately, no pets, strollers, wagons, bicycles, skateboards or other wheels are allowed on the course.
